Mom's Last Frontier

Kid free and heading to Alaska to work as a geologist. Some friends are envious … hopefully my summer will be an unforgettable experience and encourage them to also follow a dream. I thought uncertainty would happen on the first field day, but it actually started in January when I found out the guys on the crew carry guns for bear protection. Well, never having shot a handgun before, let alone 44mag revolver, this whole mom-in-Alaska deal is going to be a challenge!

About Me

Mom with 3 children – Melissa graduated from Hollins last year and works for Waldies shoes in MA; Robert just finished his junior year at Tulane in New Orleans; Jeanne will be a senior in high school in the Fall. I was born in Sheffield, England moving to South Africa with family when I was 8. I lived there 18 years becoming a naturalized SA citizen at 16. Now I’m Australian and live in the US! Go figure! I intended to be a field geologist but like many moms, children had an impact on my career path, I changed to computer-based geology … making maps. I studied geology so I could work outside and so finally, more than 20 years on, I’m headed out to the field. For the first time ever there will be no one at home this summer, Melissa is working away, Robert will also be in Alaska, Jeanne will be on a Mexico mission trip … and I don’t want to spend the summer home alone … so this mom is off to a summer of field work in Alaska! At the insistence of several envious friends (read ‘DIANA’ in Tennessee) – this is my blog.
